<-- When this plant first appeared several feet away from the garden, I thought it was a pumpkin. The white blooms were the first sign that it was not, since pumpkins have yellow blooms. A few weeks later, it revealed it's identity. --> click to enlarge photos
Bottle Gourds, often made into birdhouses are also painted and sold in craft shops.
This was a very prolific plant!! Fortunately the daylilies had finished blooming before the vine overtook them. Although, I did have to keep moving the vine as it tried to grow onto the barberry bushes!
<-- Once it had grown over and through the daylilies, it continued across the gravel in front of the garage! I was amazed that one plant could produce so much foliage, blossoms and gourds!!
Simply amazing!!! One plant produced 42 gourds! Next we'll place them on fencing, elevated off the ground to allow for air flow and they will be left to dry for several months. They are ready once the seeds rattle when the gourd is shaken. After cleaning, they'll be ready to make into birdhouses or paint.
