| SUNFLOWERS! Sunflowers are fun for young and old alike! Watching them all season: the small seedlings emerge from the soil, then grow taller and taller until the flower head forms at the top of the stalk. Slowly, but surely the flowers open up and provide gorgeous color in the back of the garden during late summer. Those vibrant yellow flowers turn during the day to follow the sun (hence their name). As the seeds form, the flower heads get heavier and heavier, drooping and bending the stalks almost to the point of breaking. When the flower petals start to shrivel and the leaves around the flowers start turning brown, it's time for harvest. Simply cut the stalk a few inches below the seed head and store in a cool, dry place for a few days. The entire seed head can then be placed on a stump or flat rock for the squirrels and birds to enjoy! (free birdseed!) |
